Tidbits from around the industry…

  • JetBlue has launched a flash sale which will save you a bit of money, but the discount is only good through tomorrow night.  The two-day travel sale offers 15% off international flights and 20% off domestic and is good only on certain dates, namely December 2-18 and January 6-February 11.  Travel is excluded on the busy days, namely Friday and Sunday, as well as January 19.  But hey, something is better than nothing.  Check out promo code WINTER14 here.
  • We’ve still got a month left on what I consider to be an above-average Virgin America promotion.  Actually, it’s a couple of promotions.  First, you’ll get double Virgin America Elevate points for Main Cabin Select (premium economy) and triple points for First Class tickets between now and December 19.  You typically earn five points per dollar spent, so if you are willing to pay up, you can really make out on the points front.  Even better: you’ll earn bonus points on top of those bonus points, and the second set of points count toward elite status.  All details are on the page above.
  • It’s getting to be that time of year when those of us north of the Mason-Dixon line have to be concerned with the weather.  While it’s always good to have an idea of your airline’s delay policies, it’s doubly important during the winter.  You should know of one or two other flights leaving around the same time as yours, although that may not help you on a discount carrier, since many of them have no interline agreements with other airlines.  In other words, in the case of a mechanical delay, they’ll either give you your money back or you can wait until the next available flight.  That doesn’t help you too much if your kid expects to see Mickey Mouse tomorrow.
  • Speaking of Orlando…as we prepare to take our kids to Disney World for the first time, I read this article about trying to hit every ride in Disney World on the same day.  Not the Magic Kingdom; every ride in every park.  Since we’re only hitting the Magic Kingdom, it’s good to know that the Frozen ride at Epcot won’t open until 2016.
