SPG and Uber have modified their points-earning agreement and, as modifications usually go, it’s a downgrade.
You’ll Earn Fewer Points
Chastity: I know you can be overwhelmed, and you can be underwhelmed, but can you ever just be ‘whelmed’?Bianca: I think you can in Europe.
-From the movie Ten Things I Hate About You
Whelming aside, as of February 1, you’ll earn fewer points for your Uber ride. In particular:
- Previously, you earned one Starwood point per dollar spent on Uber rides. That number changes from one point per dollar to one point for every two dollars.
- You’ll still get the two Starwood points per dollar spent if you take an Uber during your stay, but SPG is eliminating the additional bonus that members with elite status received.
The SPG deal is still a very good one; you’re receiving free points for doing something that you likely would have done, anyway. But it’s not quite as good as it had been.
One Silver Lining
Uber and SPG are running a promotion for the month of February. During Starwood stays, you’ll receive five points per dollar spent for riding Uber during a stay at the property. I value SPG points at 2.5-3 cents each, so your rebate is automatically double-digits. This rebate is in addition to any others you earn, such as the one from Capital One. Enjoy.
