- Free miles from Citibank: Occasionally, I’ll see an offer on another blog and will point you to the source, given that they found the offer. In this case, It’s Pointscentric noting that Citibank is offering up to 30,000 miles for opening a checking account, with the top bonus coming from the Citigold account, requiring a $50,000 balance to avoid a $30 fee. Citibank has also been known in the past for sending out a 1099 for the value of the miles, generally at an inflated value. I like any proposition that is going to give me free miles, but if it’s a bank account you are after, you’ll get a much better deal at BankDirect. Should you pursue the Citibank deal, you’ll need to use Promo Code DTTEZS60ML and meet a few other easy requirements.
- Holiday travel may be bad, but the “fun” tends to increase when flying on a discount carrier. In this case, the Turkey Award goes to Dublin-based carrier Ryan Air, who landed a plane on the wrong island due to a weather diversion (perfectly acceptable), told the passengers that they would receive ferry transportation to their destination (perfectly acceptable, given the circumstances) and then abandon them (not so much). Oh, and a word to the Ryan Air PR folks: blaming your passengers for the incident is not a good idea. What makes this even less funny is that the airline had the exact same problem on the exact same island about five years ago.
- A few opportunities for free miles. Get 2,000 points from Intercontinental just for signing up for their loyalty program. Among other brands, ICH includes the Intercontinental brand itself and the Holiday Inn hotels. You have until December 7 to sign up. And Air Berlin’s topbonus program is offering 1,000 miles just to sign up with Sixt’s car rental program. I know, you’ll never fly Air Berlin, but they tend to give away a lot of free miles and happen to be in the oneworld alliance. Found at euflyer.
- Virgin America is offering a black Friday booking special. Book before 5pm PST today and get fares as low as $49 each way. Virgin America tends to be mainly west coast but does offer some transcontinental flights.
