American Airlines Promo: Earn 10,000 AAdvantage Miles

Several weeks ago, Delta introduced a promotion that gave you miles for every new Delta partner that you used. Last week, American also introduced a partner bonus promotion.* Does it rank as well as Delta’s?

Earn 10,000 American AAdvantage Miles

The terms and conditions will get you every time.

In a word, no. Sure, it looks good: You get 2,500 miles per partner if you use all four, getting you 10,000 miles. You have until June 15 to take advantage of it. But what are you giving up?

The key to the promotion can be found in the terms and conditions. In particular, if you dig down into them, you find qualifiers for the transactions.

  • AAdvantage Dining needs to be at least a $25 purchase.*
  • Shopping through the eShopping portal at American? Your purchase needs to be $50.
  • 1-800Flowers is expense and Vinesse requires ordering a wine plan. Yeah, not so much.

The best thing about the promotion is that you may already be signed up for the Dining or Shopping rewards (Dining is through your credit card.), so those are transactions that will earn you a bonus for a purchase that you might have made, anyway. But I wouldn’t use either of the other two simply for the sake of this promotion. The bonus miles aren’t worth it.

Beginner’s Hint: If you are not familiar with either the Dining or Shopping programs, you should be. They cost you nothing and reward you for restaurant purchases where you may already be eating or shopping that you might do, anyway.
