It’s no longer new news, but still worth mentioning, particularly for those who do a lot of travel in Europe: Accor Hotels is acquiring Fairmont. There are very few Accor brands (including Sofitel, Novotel and Pullman, among others) in the United States, so domestic readers may not know much about them, but many of their brands, such as Sofitel, are quite nice and particularly target business travelers.
Unlike the Starwood/Marriott merger a few weeks ago, this one actually makes sense. Accor was somewhat weak in the luxury category, so incorporating Fairmont and Raffles, the latter being particularly high-end, is a wise move to round out the portfolio. As more hotel companies merge, it will be increasingly difficult for their smaller competitors to keep up.
