I’ll be on the road next week, so posts will be fewer and further between.
Cool. It’s so rare that I get to do a clickbaity title, although in this case, it’s true (even if a little bit overstated).
Discover 5% Categories
Every quarter, Discover chooses a category in which it will pay you a 5% cashback bonus. It’s generally an easy category in which to spend and your cash back tops out after you’ve spent $1,500 (or $75 in cash back). This quarter (7/1-9/30) is restaurants, which makes it a good time to top up your Starbucks card, among other opportunities. And next quarter, just in time for the holidays, is Amazon.
A Discover It card is a must-have, as far as I’m concerned. They have a lot of those “you never knew you needed them until you needed them” benefits, including no foreign transaction fees, a free FICO score and customer service that is entirely US-based. They also double all of your points that you earn the first year, including promotional points.
But the best feature may be access to the Discover Deals portal. I speak about Cashback Shopping frequently, but the Discover Deals portal is probably the best of all of them. They don’t have as many merchants as some of the other sites but they’re always worth a look, since their rebates are among the best.
And, for what it’s worth, Discover also offers a high-yield (Okay, it’s relative.) savings account that usually has a $100 sign-up bonus. Not too shabby.
